Trump was back on his feet in the middle of the night, and that’s entirely understandable. If federal agents had just searched your home and found top secret and special clearance documents related to nuclear weapons, you’d be up at night too. But the man who asked Merrick Garland how he could “reduce” the heat across the country made his most dangerous demand yet. He wants to release the affidavit in support of the arrest warrant “in the interests of transparency.”
He wants it unredacted. His demand would require the informant’s identity to be revealed. Trump wrote:
There is no way to justify the unannounced raid on Mar-a-Lago, home of the 45th President of the United States (who received far more votes than any sitting President in our country’s history!), by a very large one number of armed FBI agents and the “Department of Justice” but in the interest of TRANSPARENCY I demand the immediate release of the fully undredacted affidavit regarding this horrifying and shocking BURGLARY. Even the judge in this case should hold back!
Parts of the statement are almost giggling, as Trump needs to remind people it’s the “home of the 45th President of the United States.” But then he implies he’s the selfless here, and he’ll allow the court and the Justice Department to release the affidavit supporting the search “undredacted.”
Apparently, the unedited publication would – again – expose the whistleblower, putting that person’s life in serious jeopardy at the hands of the MAGAs and – if you want to think about the conspiracy – possibly some of Trump’s darker alleged allies from Eastern Europe. The whistleblower is in sufficient danger if he knows that legal proceedings may be required or that a leak may occur.
Ironically, the affidavit itself would contain information that would likely be absolutely devastating for Trump. It almost certainly lays out the hazardous materials Trump possesses, the numerous attempts to retrieve those materials, and perhaps even evidence of what the FBI believes Trump could do with the materials, all or some of which are certainly some of Trump’s reluctant supporters would get Congress to turn on him. The affidavit would expose behavior that simply cannot be justified. Trump knows that ifIf the affidavit were released, it would hurt him deeply, but he knows they will not release it, especially unredacted.
The statement is crafted to make it appear that Trump is the one giving up something and “allowing” it to be made public, as if it is under Trump’s control. It’s not, and now Trump can shout that it’s unfair that the FBI won’t be transparent. Trump’s attorneys have or will have a copy of the affidavit, but the whistleblower’s name is likely to be redacted.
The call for the judge to resign is just bizarre and is intended to make it appear as if it is an Obama-appointed anti-Trump judge, which would not be grounds for resigning anyway. But US magistrates are appointed by the district judges of that particular district and are not political appointments. In addition, Judge Reinhart supported Republican candidates as an attorney. Trump’s request is absolutely meaningless except to turn up the heat again.
Of course, this is the man who has contacted Garland – through an intermediary – to “ask” how he can reduce the heat as the country rampages against this horrific “raid”. Although the FBI came up with exactly what they were looking for and the materials were illegal to keep, Trump once again plays the victim despite his sole blame.
Morning Joe just reported that the DOJ has required the judge to keep the affidavit under wraps, as one would expect.
