Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) said Facebook was a threat to democracy and it was time to disband the social media giant.
Senator Elizabeth Warren calls for the disbandment of Facebook: “The reason you are dismantling these large monopolies is partly because of economic reasons, it creates competition, but partly because they pose a real political risk to the survival of a democracy. It’s time to break Facebook. ” pic.twitter.com/mB9eG3Kx5F

Senator Warren said on MSNBC’s The Beat with Ari Melber:
The only way we’ll go she is to be held accountablebreak it up.I understand that there are peoplewho say, well, maybe we couldregulate a little better, put more cops on the beat.Look, I’m not against it.It’s just not enough to get themJob done.We have to resolve it.How do we dissolve them. It’s a bit like the phoneSociety. You know how to call me andI can call you even if we don’tuse the same telephone provider? We have to do the sameWith our social media I cancall you and you can call me.As soon as we get through that and breakthem apart, now you have 10Social media providerServices, 50 providers for oursSocial media services. That said, I can pick one that says I won’t sell yoursInformation to someone else. The consequence of this isso that the market works better.
The second consequence is todeprive Facebook of the kind ofenormous power it now has. Think about what that means Facebook snaps upInformation from everyoneour exchange, take advantage of itand use it for yourselfUse, for advertising, forsell to third parties.Shoot to play with FootsieDictators all over the world. We have to resolve that.I’m going back to Teddy Roosevelt, who said the reason you broke upthese large monopolies are partialcreate for economic reasonsCompetition, but it is partialbecause they represent a real onepolitical risk to survivala democracy. It’s time to break up Facebook.
Facebook benefited and promoted right-wing websites that spread propaganda and disinformation that threaten democracy. Facebook is so big that Mark Zuckerberg wants people to believe he can’t control his own platform.
If so, Senator Warren is right. For the good of democracy, the federal government must intervene and dissolve Facebook.
