Maddow said of the lawsuit:
A judge ordered the FEC to act. The FEC did not act. When the FEC didn’t act, Judge said okay you can sueher private, so now herhave. This brand new lawsuit is called theNRA, but also specifically JoshHawley’s campaign as well as theAnother Republican Campaignthey claim to be coordinated illegally with the NRA, a congressman named Matt Rosendale who losthis Senate race in MontanaJon Tester, the Democrat Senator.
The Senate is also mentioned Campaigns by Thom Tillis,Arkansas’s Tom Cotton,Ron Johnson from Wisconsin and former Republican from ColoradoSenator Cory Gardner. The NRA has oneongoing campaign bypass programFinancial contributions fromCoordination of advertising with atat least seven candidates forFederal Office.
This scheme allows two NRAs Affiliate up to $ 35Millions of illegal, excessive, and unreported campaign Contributions in 2014,Elections 2016 and 2018, including up to $ 25 millionthe 2016 Trump campaign. $ 25 million in illegal donationsabout the 2016 Trump campaign? Plus all these Republicans Senators? That feels like a big deal on onefew different levels. For one, it’s a big deal about thisGroups may have found a wayactually maybe push through the campaignFinancial law that theWild west for years becausethe federal agency that isshould police do that stufffunctionally dead
.But $ 35 million is a lot tooMoney. That is supposed to be a lotillegal money washes inRepublican campaigns. That’s enough money aroundpossibly a majorEffect on the result ofmultiple choices.
The donations were clearly illegal, and the Republicans and the NRA thought they would never get caught. Claire McCaskill lost the Senate race to Josh Hawley, and while Hawley would have won without the NRA’s illegal money, we’ll never know for sure how much the illegal donations helped.
Republicans thought they figured it all out and could break the law with impunity, but the Giffords lawsuit may have cracked the code.
