Officials confirmed that eight people, including a fourteen and sixteen year old, died and 25 others were hospitalized at the Astroworld music festival in Houston on Friday.
Seven of the victims were between 14 and 27 years old, Mayor Sylvester Turner said during a press conference on Saturday afternoon. The age of a victim could not be determined.
Of the 25 people transported to the hospital, five were under 18 years of age. 13 people are still in the hospital, added the mayor. Nobody is reported missing.
Around 9 p.m. local time, the crowds gathered for a performance by rapper and festival founder Travis Scott. Concert goers huddled forward onto the stage before the concert started, causing panic and some injuries. The chaos escalated to 9:38 pm when a “mass accident” was triggered, Houston fire chief Samuel Peña said early Saturday. The cause of death of the eight victims was not yet known.
Scott, who started the festival in his hometown in 2018, said he was “absolutely devastated”.
“Houston PD has my full support as they continue to investigate the tragic loss of life,” he said in a tweet. “I am committed to working with the Houston Ward to heal and support families in need.”
Around 50,000 people should attend the festival, reported NBC News. The event was supposed to last through Saturday, but officials canceled the second day after the rush.
Rumors also circulated on social media that unknown people were injecting drugs into other patrons, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said.
He added the agency had a report about a security officer trying to attack a citizen and passed out after feeling a stab in his neck. Finner said the officer was resuscitated with Narcan, a drug commonly used to treat emergency narcotics overdoses, and was later found to have a sting that looked like someone tried to inject.
Investigations into what happened at the event and what led to the victims are still ongoing.
“This incident is being thoroughly investigated and reviewed. It is important for us to determine from last night what happened, what happened, where there may have been missteps,” said Mayor Turner.
