Lopez, 53, tells NBC News’ Morgan Radford, “This is my body,” in exclusive footage made available to PEOPLE ahead of Tuesday’s Today episode. Radford notes that Lopez didn’t live up to others’ expectations of who she was supposed to be.
Lopez explains, “It’s just who I was,” further noting that her parents have always pushed for her to embrace her unique identity.
Because of this, I often felt like a unicorn walking into places like Hollywood where people like me don’t exist. I identify as Latina. To introduce myself, my name is Jennifer Lopez and I was born and raised in the Bronx. My parents are from Puerto Rico, so I’m Puerto Rican too. Also, I feel like I’m being spoiled.
Lopez also recalls appreciating her physical form despite a lack of role models who shared her traits. The whole body itself was a phenomenon. Although I grew up in a world where not everyone was a size zero model or a tall blonde with perfect skin, I saw different ideals of beauty.
In honor of her 53rd birthday in July, Lopez posed for a series of nude photos. The launch of JLo Body by JLo Beauty was also celebrated at this time.
The Marry Me star told PEOPLE that “beauty has no expiration date” has always been her creed because she works in an industry where youth is worshiped and people try to write off people (especially women) after a certain age.
Besides, that’s it, you’re done; There are no more films for you to watch. Until further notice we will not hear your music. I looked up to the likes of Diana Ross, Cher and Tina Turner as a child, even though they were well into their 50s when I was born.
