LAS VEGAS – There can only be one king. And it only took Canelo Alvarez 11 months to accomplish this feat. He is the first undisputed super middleweight champion after a brutal TKO in the 11th round of Caleb Plant on Saturday night.
The best pound-for-pound fighter in the world made it clear that he would only be satisfied with a break if the two fighters had bad blood in the fight. And in front of a rowdy Pro Canelo crowd of 16,586 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Canelo kept his promise by putting pressure on every single moment of the fight.
Plant did his best, but he didn’t have the strength to force Canelo to respect him. He used movement and a stiff push to score, but that clearly wasn’t enough against a man on a mission to find and destroy.
Nobody, especially Plan, would stand in his way of becoming the first undisputed Mexican champion.
As the rounds progressed, Alvarez closed the distance and knocked Plant down with powerful hooks and chopping right hands. Hardly a jab was thrown by the Mexican superstar and the pressure turned out to be too great. To his credit, Plant seemed to take the blows well and fought back when the going got tough. But in the 11th, Canelo hit with a burning left hook followed by an uppercut that brought down the IBF champion.
Plant managed to get on his feet but was faced with a ferocious barrage of punches that finally knocked him down after 1:05 of the lap.

Round 10 (12:26 p.m.): They trade hooks and have some internal fights. Beautiful three-hole combination from Plant. There are a couple of nip-and-tuck rounds here. Plant does not go away at all. He is here to fight. Canelo lifts Plant’s head with his left hand, but Plant fires back with a combination of his own. Nice combination again from Plant at the end of the round. 10-9, plant (97-93, Canelo)
Round 9 (12:22 p.m.):Plant lands a quick combination and sounds defensive. Canelo knocks him down inside. Canelo’s hard left hook pulls Plant off the ropes. Plant fires a one-two that lands off the ropes. Pair of hooks from Canelo with the last landing. Plant is scraped off with a right hand. Nice combination from Plant. Plant left uppercut to close the round. 10-9, Canelo (88-83, Canelo)
Round 8 (12:18 p.m.):Canelo starts a trio of left hooks and digs for the corpse. Canelo lands on the ropes on her head and body with Plant. Plant lands on the body. Plant is still here and still fighting, but it’s another round of Canelo. 10-9, Canelo (78-74, Canelo)
Round 7 (12:14 p.m.): Canelo is back on the hunt and lands a left hand. He feels that Plant is worn out. Canelo cracks plant with a left uppercut. Plant tries to fend him off and lands a hard short left that Canelo seems to tick off. Canelo has her back to the ropes and waits for Plant to attack. Plant does not throw and the crowd is restless. Canelo has had enough and is coming forward. They collide with their heads. Canelo just cracked Plant with a nasty three-punch combo to end the round. 10-9, Canelo (68-65, Canelo)
Round 6 (12:10 p.m.): Plant hits him in the middle of the ring to start round 6, but Canelo quickly puts him on the ropes and lands a left hand followed by a hacking right hook. Canelo throws the left hook with great force. Canelo lands a stiff combination of three punches and a left hand followed by a right hand that hurts Plant. A left hand from Canelo rocking Plant. Canelo has now slipped into a powerful and brutal rhythm. It is becoming apparent that Plant is no longer taking the blows as it did before. 10-9, Canelo (58-56, Canelo)
Round 5 (12:06 p.m.): Plant still throws hands, but Canelo is unmolested. Like, completely undisturbed. Hard uppercut by Canelo. Body and head hook from Canelo. Plant fires more jabs, but Canelo chases him. Interesting round. Plant threw a lot more punches, but Canelo landed a few hard shots. Plant on activity. 10-9 plants (48-47 Canelo)
Round 4 (12:03 p.m.): Plant is still moving very well, but Canelo is finally catching up and leaning into him with a combination. Canelo drills the corpse. Plant doesn’t have enough hits to fend off Canelo. Canelo just misses the right of the upper hand. Plant is still throwing and Canelo lights it with a left hook. The lack of electricity is a problem for Plant. 10-9, Canelo (39-37, Canelo)
Round 3 (11:58 p.m.):Plant quickly goes to the center of the ring and lands a jab and hook. Canelo shrugs and appears. Plant and Canelo’s Uppercut responds with two body shots. Stiff jab from Plant. Canelo’s hard left hook supports Plant up. Canelo with a pair of left hooks on top. Plant moves well and pokes Canelo in the face. Left with the corpse by Canelo. Plant with a nice hook on the body. Canelo is about to go back. Solid round. 10-9., Canelo (29-28, Canelo)
Round 2 (11:54 p.m.):Plants pangs Canelo with a jab, but it is already clear that he is fending off the hunter. Canelo lands a hard uppercut on the inside. Plant with an uppercut. Canelo is still coming in. Left hook lands at Canelo. A lot of pressure from Canelo. Plant with a great range of jabs. Canelo works the body with a hook and leaves it no air to breathe. Plant fights well, but you have to deal with this pressure a lot. He’s going to have to land something that will make Canelo respect him.10-9, plant (19-19)
Round 1 (11 : 50 o’clock) : Plant hits Canelo in the middle of the ring and fires a series of jabs. Canelo asserts itself and looks for an opening. Canelo closes the distance and lands a hard right hand. Canelo supports Plant on the ropes and unloads. Plant defends and circles. A nice jab lands at Plant, but Canelo is on the hunt. 11:39 pm: Plant enters the ring to a boo, accompanied by hip-hop artist Conway the Machine. And Canelo? The roof blew for his appearance with the lead singer of Mana, who joined him. Both fighters are in the ring. It’s time.
11:22 pm:The main event is just around the corner. First the national anthems and second the fighters to the ring.
Anthony Dirrell puts Marco Hernandez away in the fourth round
11:10 p.m.: Well, that didn’t take long. Anthony Dirrell wiped out Hernandez with an uppercut that he threw all the way out of Michigan. Hernandez somehow managed to get on his feet, but he had no legs and the fight was abandoned in the fourth round after 22 seconds. Dirrell will certainly try to get back into the fight for the title at the age of 37.
10:57 pm: The co-main event is now between Dirrell and Hernandez. Dirrell is a 3-1 favorite and opens with blazing weapons. Sure, he’s doing this to make a statement about another title chance, but he has to be careful against Hernandez.
Rey Vargas cruises to unanimous decision on Leonardo Baez

10:43 pm : As expected, Vargas made a decision, but many expected a knockout. Still an easy win against a strong opponent.
10:34 p.m. : Well, this fight goes into the final round. Vargas is up and Baez won’t go away. Can he achieve the goal or is Vargas okay with a decision here?
10:14 p.m .: We’re going into the fifth round and Baez is still hanging around. He’s going to be outclassed by Vargas but he won’t go away. But it definitely feels like Vargas is running away with glowing combinations and a long jab.
9:59 pm: We’re not wasting a lot of time here because Rey Vargas (34-0, 22 KOs) meets Leonardo Baez (21-4, 12 KOs). Vargas are a 16-1 favorite so there is no reason to expect this fight to last very long.
Elvis Rodriguez defeated Juan Pablo Romero in the 5th round
9:39 pm: Taking a little time to warm up, Rodriguez finished the job with a nice straight left hand that sank Romero’s battleship in the final seconds of round five. Romero sat on the screen and watched the referee count him. Great performance and a great way to get back to your triumphs.
9:35 pm : It looked like Romero would advance in the fight by winning the second and third rounds until Rodriguez leveled him with his left hand and followed up with a combination that sent Romero to the canvas. A very competitive and fun fight to open the PPV.
9:26 pm: Elvis Rodrigue and Juan Pablo Romero may be preparing to give us a bang for the PPV’s opening bout. The action picks up in round 2 with some heated arguments.
9:13 pm:We start with Elvis Rodriguez, who is trying to get back on the road to success against Juan Pablo Romero. Rodriguez suffered his first loss by majority decision against Kenneth Sims Jr. The knockout artist wants to get a finish against Romero, who competed in the 2016 Olympics.
