Rumors started circulating this week about the possibility of Brown’s quarterback Baker Mayfield requesting a trade due to issues with head coach Kevin Sefanski this off-season.
Well, Mayfield claimed these rumors were false on Thursday in a tweet to a local Cleveland reporter who wrote about the rumors.
Clickbait. They and much of the other local Cleveland media outlets continue to be dramatic reporters with no sources or facts. Don’t put words in my mouth so you can put food on your table. I am not your puppet. https://t.co/MfHnqWk65s

MORE: Did Baker Mayfield play his last game with the Browns?
The rumors really took off in mid-December after Mayfield said he’d been looking into “internal issues” with the Browns this year that contributed to some of his problems on the field. His comments on the team weren’t entirely clear.
“It all comes down to finding the right balance between the really important opinions around you – friends, family, teammates,” Mayfield said in an interview with Kurt Warner of the NFL Network. “That was the tricky thing about this year: there were a lot of internal things. It wasn’t just outside noise. “
Stefanski responded to these comments by saying that he and Mayfield communicate with each other on an almost daily basis. It’s unclear what Mayfield was referring to, and Stefanski has not given any further details since then.

#Brown OC Alex Van Pelt feels no tension between Baker Mayfield and Kevin Stefanski. “I’ve seen zero of that. I don’t feel it at all.”

Mayfield has struggled with injuries for most of the season and is expected to have left shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum on January 19. He will suspend the Browns’ final game of the season against the Bengals on Sunday. The Browns have already been eliminated from the playoffs.
Mayfield’s rookie deal, which was signed in 2018, was a four-year deal worth $ 32,682,980, according to Spotrac. A fifth year option was available in the contract, and the Browns opted for that option in April, after Mayfield’s playoff run in the 2020/21 season. The deal in 2022 is set to cost $ 18.9 million.

Mayfield could still be cut or traded this off-season despite calling the trade rumors “clickbait”. Ultimately, it’s up to the Browns whether they want to keep the quarterback.
