Taking a look at Chris Farley and David Spade from the skin, Adam Sandler recalled the incident most clearly. It appeared that Farley would fly right into a rage about little issues that had nothing to do with efficiency or stage time. Farley’s mood, it appears, went off over private issues. Sandler stated:

“These guys had been the tightest. David and Chris was so tight … I used to be tight with Chris, [but] these guys had been like actual finest associates … When he’d get pissed at David, Farley [would] at all times come over to me … like, he had a loopy mood, Farley. So he would simply be stewing mad about nothing — about [Spade] — however simply, like, no matter. Like, if a lady talked to him he’d be like ‘Why is that lady–’ like, he’d get so indignant that David was speaking to a lady or one thing.”

Sandler needed to play peacemaker in these moments, and he helped calm Farley down by explaining the logical consequence of his desired actions. Hitting Spade, Sandler would inform Farley, was a no-win scenario: Whether or not Farley received or misplaced the fistfight, he could be the loser.

“He’d be like, ‘I am gonna kill him, I am gonna punch him!’ and I might be like, ‘No … do not hit him.’ And he’d be like ‘No, I gotta hit him! I am gonna crush him!’ And I might say, ‘It does not make sense — should you knock him out you are often known as a jerk. And should you lose, my god, you are often known as only a large p****’ And he’d be like, ‘You are proper, you are proper.'”

This was sufficient to calm Farley and allay any wrath.

Spade admitted to fearing Farley’s anger, however he typically calmed his good friend earlier than fights broke out.

Spade remained unpunched.
